Front Line

The whistle blows Over we go Heads bowed down Bodies low Rifles forward Don’t look up One more step You’re still in luck Bullets fly All around Bodies fall Without a sound Not a scream Just a jolt Legs give way A sudden halt Shells explode Thud, thud, thud On my feet Bloodied mud Guns roar loud Canon fire Tortured soul In the mire Ears erupt Silence falls A deathly hush Consumes us all We stagger forward Not a sound Eyes still focused on the ground I think of home I think of Mum Of days gone past And all the fun Of bright blue skies of summer days of children laughing in the haze A sudden crack A hollow cry My body topples…

For Whom The Bell Tolls

Church bells toll loud, Wootton Basset stands still Silence descends, soldiers follow the drill Banners are lowered, heads bowed to the ground Grief swirls above them without any sound Families lock hands and hold back their tears For all loved ones gone, an end to their years For lives snatched away in a far off land Young men gone forever, like shifting sand The hearses glide past, the coffins in shrouds Emotions erupt, cries echo all around Small children sobbing, families distraught Move forward with flowers, deep in their thought They link arms together, share a last kiss For young sons departed, forever missed © Graham Walker 2012 Photo courtesy of  Flickr user jamesdellphotography.

Dark storm clouds gather in the East thunder explodes in a giant flash We scatter quickly from the feast our homes destroyed, our lives now smashed Our children frightened, our women scared Our cries are stifled, our wishes spurned. We try to shelter, our pleas are spurned The tanks they rumble from the East Young fighters gather, all are scared they disappear quickly in a white flash Our schools are shelled, mosques are smashed Nowhere left to continue our feast. The children cry, they want to feast but no one hears, their words are spurned The planes descend their shelters smashed the soldiers gather from the East Their guns explode with a flash our homes erupt, we hide there scared. Young boys push forward,…

Farewell

Posted on February 1, 2012

Silent, sombre, she drifts into a sleep her eyes closed so tightly, ending her days. Figure broken, but she never did weep for dreams forgot and then taken away. Children forsaken and lovers just spurned, for the many hearts lost for friendships gone. Lingers she not on those that she did yearn, her life over, regrets she has but none. Those that remain always cherish her soul sadness prevails for all that we have lost There is no one here to take on her role her short life departed at such a cost Cover her face and pull on the grey shroud, we kneel alongside her and cry out loud. © Graham Walker 2012 Photo courtesy of Flickr user rembcc.

Snow falling in Venice, whiteness abounds Souls now abandoned, lie crisp, cold and still The scourge of cholera hovers all around Families broken, stacked down in the ground Cries follow tears, cast high with a loud shrill| Snow falling in Venice, whiteness abounds The Lido now empty, St. Marks no sound| Grand Canal silent, gondolas quite still The scourge of cholera hovers all around Doge’s Palace shuttered, Palazzos now bound With chains and locks to keep out those ill Snow falling in Venice, whiteness abounds A moment of gladness takes off the frown Spirits awake, and snatch life with its thrill The scourge of cholera hovers all around Dark nights return, cruel shadows are thrown On children and parents who lie quite still Snow…
